Required pre-reading will be sent to registered attendees two weeks prior to the course start date. It is recommended that you set aside at least one day to properly review material prior to attendance. Subject to availability, participants may have the opportunity to register after the official registration deadline. However, please note that this will result in a reduced timeframe to complete the required reading.
In this intensive online advocacy course you will increase your skills in Family Law matters with personalised and effective advocacy. Using a contested hearing as a template, you will practise and receive skills advice in case analysis, preparation, performance preparation, effective examination, cross-examination and persuasive argument.
The course is built for legal practitioners who appear before the family courts regularly and consists of a combination of interactive general sessions and performance sessions in breakout groups.
Participants are recommended to complete no more than one Solicitor Advocate Course per calendar year.
Program:
Session 1: Introduction to advocacy, case theory and argument
Wednesday 11 June | 5–6.30pm
This interactive general session consists of an analysis and the development of a case theory and its importance for setting the foundations of good advocacy.
Session 2: Techniques in cross-examination and communication in court
Thursday 12 June | 5–6pm
This interactive general session involves discussion and illustration of specific techniques in advocacy and reviewing communication skills in the courtroom.
Session 3: Advocacy in action
Saturday 14 June | 8.45am–3.15pm
This performance session involves instructor demonstrations, short performances by participants of set advocacy tasks and the opportunity to practise trial techniques. Participants receive reviews of performances.
