Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott) Oration
Tuesday 28 May | 5.30-8pm | Banco Court, Brisbane
The Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland invites you to attend the Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott) Oration (Oration).
Hosted by the Honourable Helen Bowskill, Chief Justice of Queensland, the Oration is an annual address aimed at educating the Queensland legal community. It seeks to foster dialogue and raise awareness about the current legal issues affecting First Nations peoples. As its name suggests, the Oration also honours the memory of Mullenjaiwakka (Lloyd McDermott), Australia's first Aboriginal barrister. It pays tribute to his achievements, passion for providing opportunities for others, and resilience and strength of character in the face of adversity.
In 2024, the Oration will be delivered by the Honourable Justice Louise Taylor, a Kamilaroi woman and the first Aboriginal woman in Australia to be appointed to a superior court.
The Oration will take place during National Reconciliation Week at the Banco Court on Tuesday, 28 May 2024 from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. The Oration will commence at 6:00pm, followed by light refreshments, canapes, and networking in Portrait Gallery.
